Eurostat, the European Commission’s statistical service, recently published new population forecasts for the European Union and each of its member states for the period 2022-2100. Even when the obvious degree of uncertainty consequent on the use of approximate hypotheses is taken into account, these forecasts confirm the low demographic vitality intrinsic to the European Union, the intensified ageing of its population, and its strong dependence on an influx of people from elsewhere.
