Last summer, INSEE, the French national statistics office, published an issue of INSEE Première interpreting the findings of the second ‘Trajectories and Origins’ survey conducted in 2019-20, 11 years after the first exercise, and hence focused on how the ‘self-declared experience of discrimination’ has changed over time in France. Demographer Michèle Tribalat examines this publication, highlighting the approximations and shortcuts in its methods, including a tendency to equate perception of discrimination with the reality of discriminatory acts. She indicates the necessary precautions to be taken with regard to using the survey’s findings in the way that INSEE presents them.
