We published an article by Rémi Lallement in Futuribles (November 1998, n° 236), titled “The Economy of the Eastern German Lander: a Unique Trajectory”. It sketched a first evaluation of German unification and the mid- and long-term perspectives for the former Democratic Republic, nine years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
To complement that article, which developed mainly an economic perspective, a German sociologist shares with us his observation that two distinct societies persist within the united Germany, with bitterness on both sides in spite of efforts by the former Federal Republic.
